I installed the plugin but when I attempted to activate it, I got this error code.

It is a PHP version error. Gravity Forms requires PHP 5. You are trying to activate it on a site running PHP 4.
You need to activate PHP 5 on your site. This is typically done via a simple hosting control panel setting but you will have to check with your web host for specifics on how to make this change.
