I read this post, but it doesn't give me what I am looking for.

What I want to do is use a single line text field, and create a tag entry in a taxonomy called 'Writer'.
All of the posts and code mention selecting from a drop down, but nothing on inputting a value in a text field to create the new taxonomy term.
Is there a way to do this?
